P0741 P0xxx · Powertrain (P) Medium severity
Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance / Stuck Off
The torque converter lock-up clutch is not applying when commanded. The engine revs higher than it should at steady cruise and fuel economy suffers.
Severity guidance: Medium — drivability or emissions affected, book it in this week
Symptoms you will notice
- Higher RPM at motorway speed
- Worse fuel economy
- Transmission fluid running hot
- Possible shudder on light throttle
Common causes
Ordered from most to least likely — start at the top.
- 1 Failed TCC solenoid
- 2 Worn converter clutch
- 3 Low or degraded fluid
- 4 Valve body leakage
How to diagnose it
Cheapest and least invasive first — most of these codes are not a parts problem.
- ✓ Watch TCC slip speed in live data during steady cruise — it should fall to near zero when locked.
- ✓ Command the TCC solenoid and watch the response.
- ✓ Check fluid level and condition.
- ✓ Inspect for a shudder at 40–70 km/h, which indicates clutch wear.
Repair options
- Replace the TCC solenoid
- Fluid and filter service
- Converter or transmission rebuild if the clutch is worn
P0741 — frequently asked questions
Why does my economy drop but nothing feels wrong? +
Unlocked converter means constant slip — roughly 200–400 rpm extra at cruise, which you pay for in fuel.
Will additive fix the shudder? +
Sometimes it masks it briefly. The underlying clutch wear remains.
