Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow

The ECU commanded the purge valve open but the expected change in fuel trims or tank pressure did not occur — a flow problem rather than a leak.

Severity guidance: Low — usually no drivability impact, fix at the next service

Symptoms you will notice

  • Rough idle after refuelling
  • Hard starting when hot
  • Fuel smell near the engine bay
  • Slightly high fuel consumption

Common causes

Ordered from most to least likely — start at the top.

  1. 1 Stuck-open or stuck-closed purge valve
  2. 2 Blocked vapour line
  3. 3 Failed purge solenoid
  4. 4 Disconnected or cracked hose at the intake

How to diagnose it

Cheapest and least invasive first — most of these codes are not a parts problem.

  1. ✓ Command the purge valve and watch fuel trims and tank pressure respond.
  2. ✓ Check the hose from the valve to the intake manifold for cracks.
  3. ✓ Blow through the valve: it should be sealed when de-energised.
  4. ✓ Smoke-test the whole vapour path if flow is still unexplained.

Repair options

  • Replace the purge solenoid
  • Clear or replace the blocked hose
  • Repair the intake-side connection

P0441 — frequently asked questions

Why does the engine stumble after filling up? +

A stuck-open purge valve dumps a rich vapour cloud into the intake right when the tank is full.

Is this a leak or a blockage? +

P0441 usually means flow is wrong, not that vapour is escaping — start with the purge valve, not the cap.
