U0184 U0xxx · Network (U) Low severity
Lost Communication with Radio / Infotainment Module
The head unit has dropped off the bus. Rarely affects driving, but on fibre-optic (MOST) systems one dead node can silence the whole ring.
Severity guidance: Low — usually no drivability impact, fix at the next service
Symptoms you will notice
- No audio or dead screen
- All speakers silent
- Steering-wheel controls dead
Common causes
Ordered from most to least likely — start at the top.
- 1 Head unit power fault
- 2 MOST fibre ring broken at one node
- 3 CAN fault
- 4 Aftermarket audio interface
How to diagnose it
Cheapest and least invasive first — most of these codes are not a parts problem.
- ✓ On fibre systems, check whether other ring nodes work — one break kills the whole ring.
- ✓ Check fuses and the head unit connector.
- ✓ Look for aftermarket interfaces teed into the bus.
- ✓ Bypass each node if the vehicle supports a ring test.
Repair options
- Restore power or repair the wiring
- Replace the failed node
- Remove or correctly interface aftermarket audio
U0184 — frequently asked questions
Why is everything silent, not just one speaker? +
MOST fibre is a ring. Any break takes down every node on it.
Is it worth fixing? +
Depends on the vehicle. On fibre systems it also affects navigation, phone and sometimes vehicle settings.
