Low Speed CAN / LIN Bus Communication
Fault on a low-speed or single-wire LIN bus. These carry simple devices: mirrors, seat modules, rain sensors, alternator control.
Severity guidance: Low — usually no drivability impact, fix at the next service
Symptoms you will notice
- One accessory stops working
- Mirror or seat functions lost
- Usually no drivability impact
Common causes
Ordered from most to least likely — start at the top.
- 1 Open or shorted LIN wire
- 2 Failed slave device
- 3 Corroded connector
- 4 Master module fault
How to diagnose it
Cheapest and least invasive first — most of these codes are not a parts problem.
- ✓ LIN is single-wire and easy to spot — check the wire to the affected device first.
- ✓ Measure the LIN line: it should idle near battery voltage and pull low when transmitting.
- ✓ Disconnect the suspect slave and see whether the line recovers.
- ✓ Inspect connectors at the device end.
Repair options
- Repair the LIN wire
- Replace the failed slave device
- Repair the master module
U0020 — frequently asked questions
How is LIN different from CAN? +
Single wire, much slower, master/slave instead of multi-master. Used where cost matters more than speed.
Will one dead device kill the whole LIN bus? +
Yes — that is the weakness of single-wire LIN. Unplugging the faulty device usually restores the rest.
