P0606 P0xxx · Powertrain (P) High severity
ECM / PCM Processor Fault
The engine control module's internal self-check has failed. Before replacing an ECU, exhaust every external cause — most of these turn out to be power or earth problems.
Severity guidance: High — stop driving and diagnose now; risk of further damage
Symptoms you will notice
- No start
- Multiple unrelated warning lights
- Communication failure with the scan tool
- Erratic behaviour
Common causes
Ordered from most to least likely — start at the top.
- 1 Corrupted software or failed flash
- 2 Power supply problems: bad earth, low voltage, voltage spikes
- 3 Water ingress into the ECU connector
- 4 Internal hardware failure (genuinely rare)
How to diagnose it
Cheapest and least invasive first — most of these codes are not a parts problem.
- ✓ Check battery voltage, all ECU earths and the main fuses first.
- ✓ Inspect the ECU connector and housing for water or corrosion.
- ✓ Try to communicate with a scan tool; note which modules respond.
- ✓ Confirm with the dealer whether a software update or reflash applies.
- ✓ Only then consider ECU replacement or repair.
Repair options
- Repair power/earth faults and reflash
- Dry and seal the connector
- Replace or repair the ECU as a last resort
P0606 — frequently asked questions
Does this mean the ECU is dead? +
No. In workshop practice the majority of P0606 cases are power supply, earth or water ingress, not a dead processor.
Can it be reflashed at home? +
Not reliably. Use dealer-level or professional tooling with a stable power supply during the procedure.
