P0500 P0xxx · Powertrain (P) Medium severity
Vehicle Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
No vehicle speed signal reaching the ECU or instrument cluster. Transmission shifting, speedometer and stability systems all depend on this input.
Severity guidance: Medium — drivability or emissions affected, book it in this week
Symptoms you will notice
- Speedometer dead
- Harsh or wrong gear changes
- ABS/ESP warning lights
- Cruise control disabled
Common causes
Ordered from most to least likely — start at the top.
- 1 Failed wheel speed or output shaft speed sensor
- 2 Open or shorted wiring
- 3 Damaged tone ring
- 4 Faulty instrument cluster (some vehicles)
How to diagnose it
Cheapest and least invasive first — most of these codes are not a parts problem.
- ✓ Compare speed in the engine ECU, transmission ECU and ABS ECU — if ABS has it but the engine does not, the problem is the wiring or gateway.
- ✓ Read live wheel speeds on a scan tool while rolling slowly.
- ✓ Inspect tone rings for damage or heavy rust.
- ✓ Scope the sensor output at the connector.
Repair options
- Replace the speed sensor
- Repair the wiring
- Replace the damaged tone ring
P0500 — frequently asked questions
Which sensor is it if there are four wheel sensors? +
Read all four live. One reading zero while the others track speed identifies it immediately.
Why did ABS and the gearbox both complain? +
They share the same wheel-speed data; a single sensor fault cascades across modules.
