Lost Communication with Drive Motor / Inverter Control Module
On hybrids and EVs, the main ECU has lost contact with the inverter or motor controller. The vehicle will not drive or will not ready-up.
Severity guidance: High — stop driving and diagnose now; risk of further damage
Symptoms you will notice
- Ready lamp does not come on
- No drive
- HV system warnings
Common causes
Ordered from most to least likely — start at the top.
- 1 Inverter supply or earth fault
- 2 CAN fault on the powertrain bus
- 3 Failed inverter module
- 4 HV interlock open
How to diagnose it
Cheapest and least invasive first — most of these codes are not a parts problem.
- ✓ Follow high-voltage safety procedure — do not work on orange harnesses without the correct qualification.
- ✓ Check the HV interlock and service disconnect status.
- ✓ Verify inverter low-voltage supply and earth.
- ✓ Read the inverter's own codes if reachable.
Repair options
- Restore the HV interlock
- Repair the supply or bus wiring
- Replace the inverter (HV-qualified work only)
U0110 — frequently asked questions
Can a normal workshop fix this? +
Diagnosis yes, but any work inside the HV system needs HV-qualified personnel and the correct PPE.
Is it dangerous? +
The HV system carries lethal voltage. Isolate and verify zero potential before touching anything orange.
