Lost Communication with TCM (Transmission Control Module)
The engine ECU cannot talk to the transmission controller. The gearbox usually defaults to limp mode or refuses to engage.
Severity guidance: High — stop driving and diagnose now; risk of further damage
Symptoms you will notice
- No gear engagement or limp mode
- Gearbox warning lamp
- Harsh shifts
- P0700 alongside
Common causes
Ordered from most to least likely — start at the top.
- 1 TCM power or earth fault
- 2 CAN wiring fault between ECU and TCM
- 3 Failed TCM
- 4 Water ingress in the gearbox connector
How to diagnose it
Cheapest and least invasive first — most of these codes are not a parts problem.
- ✓ Check TCM fuses, earths and the gearbox connector for fluid ingress.
- ✓ Try to talk to the TCM directly with the scan tool.
- ✓ Measure CAN at the gearbox connector.
- ✓ Inspect the harness where it passes near the exhaust or bell housing.
Repair options
- Repair the power supply or CAN wiring
- Clean or replace the fluid-contaminated connector
- Replace the TCM if genuinely failed
U0101 — frequently asked questions
Why does fluid in the connector matter? +
Transmission fluid wicks along the harness and contaminates the pins — a very common cause on automatics.
Will a replacement TCM need coding? +
Almost always, plus adaptation resets. Plan for that, not just the swap.
