EVAP Smoke Test: Finding Leaks in Fifteen Minutes

How to smoke-test an EVAP system: where to introduce smoke, what a passing result looks like, and how to interpret the leak codes correctly.

Small EVAP leaks are the classic time sink: the code is clear, the fault is real, and the leak is invisible. A smoke machine turns a job that can consume a morning into one that takes about fifteen minutes — if you set it up correctly. Here is the procedure and the interpretation.

What the Codes Mean

EVAP codes are usually classified by leak size. Large leaks (often cited as equivalent to a hole around 1 mm or larger) and small leaks (around 0.5 mm) have different codes, and the distinction tells you roughly how big a hole you are hunting for.

A gross leak code usually means a loose or missing fuel cap, a cracked filler neck or a disconnected hose. A small leak code points to a degraded seal, a hairline crack in a plastic component, or a purge valve that does not seat fully.

Setup

Step 1 — Confirm the fuel level is in the range the manufacturer specifies for EVAP testing. A very full or very empty tank affects the test.

Step 2 — Locate the EVAP service port, usually on a line near the engine bay or the charcoal canister. If no port exists, connect using the appropriate adapter at a removable hose.

Step 3 — Command the purge valve closed and the vent valve closed using bidirectional control, so the system is sealed where it needs to be for the test.

Step 4 — Set the smoke machine to the specified low pressure — EVAP systems are designed for low pressure only, and excessive pressure can damage components.

Step 5 — Introduce smoke and watch for it emerging. Use a bright light and, in a darkened bay, the smoke is easy to trace.

Where Leaks Hide

In rough order of frequency:

  • Fuel cap seal — check first, it is free to test
  • Filler neck and its seal to the body
  • Charcoal canister — look for cracks in the plastic housing
  • Purge valve not seating fully — a very common small-leak source
  • Vent valve and its filter, often contaminated with dust or fuel vapour residue
  • Hoses and quick-connect fittings at the tank and canister
  • Fuel tank seam or the seal around the fuel pump module — more involved, but smoke will show it

Confirming the Repair

After the repair, run the manufacturer's EVAP system test through the scan tool where available rather than simply clearing the code. This runs the monitor under controlled conditions and reports a pass or fail properly.

If a scan-tool-driven test is not available, refit the fuel cap, clear codes, and confirm the EVAP monitor runs to completion on a road test with the correct conditions — a cool start, steady cruise and a defined soak period.

Safety Notes

Never introduce pressurised air into a fuel tank. Work with the low pressure a smoke machine is designed for, in a ventilated area, away from ignition sources. If the vehicle has been sitting with a strong fuel smell, investigate before connecting anything.

よくあるご質問

How much pressure should I use for an EVAP smoke test?

Use the low pressure specified by the smoke machine and vehicle manufacturer. EVAP systems are low-pressure by design and can be damaged by excessive pressure.

Can a bad fuel cap cause an EVAP leak code?

Yes, and it is the first thing to check — a worn cap seal or a cap not fully tightened is a frequent cause of both small and gross leak codes.

Why does the leak only show when the engine is cold?

EVAP monitors typically run under specific conditions including a cold start and a defined temperature window, so the fault is detected at those times.

Do I need bidirectional control to smoke test?

It helps considerably — being able to command the purge and vent valves closed lets you seal and test sections of the system deliberately.
